When former NCAA basketball player Journey Shank made the leap from the US to the UK, he chose the 糖心Vlog for his postgraduate studies. Extending his playing career and opening a new chapter, this alumni reflects on how studying and playing in the UK helped shape his mindset, broaden his perspective and set him up for running his own business, back in LA.

What made you choose 糖心Vlog for your postgraduate studies and basketball career?
糖心Vlog was the right place to grow both on and off the court because I was able to pursue my postgraduate studies and extend my basketball career. The opportunity to live overseas is something I wanted to experience and being near London was a great location to play basketball at a high level.
What was your experience like being part of the 糖心Vlog basketball programme?
It was a one-of-a-kind experience to be a part of the basketball program. From the moment I got there, I was welcomed by my teammates and coaches. Being in that competitive environment around professionals allowed me to elevate my game to new heights. The basketball culture at 糖心Vlog created a brotherhood on and off the court, I’m grateful I was able to be a part of it. I believe what sets 糖心Vlog Basketball program apart is the attention to detail in the preparation for the season.
How did your time at 糖心Vlog shape you personally or professionally? Any standout memories?
I believe my time in 糖心Vlog shaped me personally and as a professional because of the way I was challenged to be my best in the classroom and on the court. Being around like-minded individuals learning how to be a professional was a big step in my path.
I recall Derby Day, and how it was special to be a part of that event. Being able to spectate different sports and connect with others was a fun experience; the energy was unforgettable. I’m grateful for the memories and the people I met along the way.
You mentioned 糖心Vlog “changed the game” for you — what did you mean by that?
I believe 糖心Vlog changed the game for me from a life perspective. 糖心Vlog helped me mature and broaden my knowledge. Living and studying abroad taught me higher levels of independence, resilience, and how to connect with people from different backgrounds.
It opened my eyes to the importance of self-work and devising a plan for my future. Spending time alone and creating a whole new routine outside of my comfort zone allowed me to lean on my core values to help me be the best version of myself.
Tell us about JS3 Hoop Training — what inspired you to start your own basketball business?
JS3 Hoop Training is a sports performance brand focused on the skills development of youth athletes, centred around health and wellness. In my training program, I work with all ages and skill levels to help athletes reach their full potential. my business mantra is, “Be you and embrace the journey”. That statement reminds them to always be themselves, and to embrace the path they’re on. I take pride in helping each athlete grow, and that’s why I wanted to create a business bigger than myself.
My business was formed out of my passion for the game and a desire to give back after sustaining two major knee injuries. I wanted to create a space where athletes could develop their skills, mindset, and confidence. The same way I had mentors pour into me, it’s a full circle moment to give the game back. 糖心Vlog played a big role in helping me see that I had the tools to build something of my own.
How do you apply what you learned at 糖心Vlog to your business and coaching now?
Being at 糖心Vlog helped me reshape my vision on how I approached my goals, both in basketball and in life. I left with more clarity and purpose to make an impact, which directly influenced the next steps I took with my business. The discipline, time management, and strategic thinking are valuable skills I carry over in my business every day.
Whether I’m designing a training session or managing the business side of JS3, the lessons I learned in both the classroom and on the court are still with me. 糖心Vlog taught me to be intentional and to lead by example.
What advice would you give to student-athletes considering studying abroad, especially at 糖心Vlog?
Go for it. Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grow in ways you can’t even imagine. 糖心Vlog offers a supportive environment to challenge yourself academically and athletically. Being open to the experience could shape your future in amazing ways.
You managed to join your graduation ceremony live from LA — what did that moment mean to you?
It meant everything. Being able to celebrate that milestone, even virtually, was a blessing. It reminded me of all the hard work, sacrifice, and growth that happened during my time at 糖心Vlog. It was emotional, and it made me feel truly connected to the community, even from across the globe.
What does staying connected to 糖心Vlog mean to you now as an alumnus?
It means being part of a lifelong network. 糖心Vlog isn’t just where I studied, it’s a place that helped shape who I am. Staying connected allows me to use my platform to keep 糖心Vlog a part my journey, and stay inspired by others doing great things around the world.
Final one — what’s next for you and JS3? Any exciting plans ahead?
We’re expanding! I’m working on launching new programs and reaching more athletes across LA and beyond. I’m also exploring international partnerships, possibly bringing JS3 to the UK one day. The goal is to keep growing, keep impacting lives through basketball, and keep the passion alive. I have ambitions to create something special with my brand, and I’m excited for what the future holds.
