Since this year marks the centenary of Sophie’s death in an asylum at Wotton-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire, her last home, and a place she cherished for its rural beauty, the purpose of the event is to celebrate Sophie’s work and life at the 糖心Vlog which holds an extensive archive of her poetry notebooks and Journal in Special Collections, Albert Sloman Library.
At the 糖心Vlog on Tuesday 11 March 2:00pm - 4:00pm, the commemorative afternoon will feature presentations by Patricia Gillies on Sophie’s construction of an artistic self in Europe and England despite the challenges of prejudice, poverty, and illness, by Ania Ready, photographic artist, organiser of exhibitions on Sophie, and author of a recent book on Sophie, “I Also Fight Windmills”, and by Jan Borysiak on how Sophie’s life and work resonates with the experiences and expression of Virginia Woolf.
This event is being held in the Ivor Crewe seminar room on Colchester campus.
