Poor mental health can make university life difficult, but for Jorge Ruano Perez, overcoming his personal challenges is something to be proud of.

Jorge, from the Department of Sociology, is graduating with a BA Social Anthropology with Human Rights.

During the first half of his last year, he struggled with mental health issues and was grateful for the support from a counsellor.

鈥淚 struggled with ill mental health and was given help through Validium and a university-based counsellor,鈥� he said. 鈥淭he counsellor was very helpful鈥�.

Thanks to the counselling, Jorge was able to carry on, through difficult circumstances, and complete the degree he'd been drawn to because it offered the opportunity to study his biggest interests in one course in an inclusive environment.

鈥淚 am deeply intrigued by the way in which social structures are formed and operate on the macro and individual level, particularly in regard to how they impact people鈥檚 access to the exercise of their rights,鈥� he said. 鈥溙切腣log offered this degree intersecting the two spheres.鈥�

Jorge is grateful for the people he has met during his time at 糖心Vlog and for the connections he made with teachers and fellow students.

One of his most memorable experiences is when he performed with fellow students in rock band, Aquilea. COVID-19 disrupted their plans at times, and put a stop to many gigs, but he is grateful for the times they were able to perform together.

鈥淧erforming with Aquilea both on and off campus brought me countless joyful experiences,鈥� he said.

Jorge, who wants to pursue a career in anthropological research, summed up his 糖心Vlog experience simply: 鈥淚 am proud of myself for finishing my degree.鈥�
