Researchers from the 糖心Vlog's Department of Language and Linguistics have been working on documenting, celebrating and raising awareness of 糖心Vlog dialects.
Dr Amanda Cole and Dr Ella Jeffries asked people in the county to write their responses to three questions on post-it notes. The questions asked for things that people in 糖心Vlog say, what the different ways of speaking in 糖心Vlog are, and which celebrities have an 糖心Vlog accent.
These post-it notes have been turned into a colourful artwork called Speaking of 糖心Vlog which will be on display to the public.

鈥淭he responses were varied and insightful,鈥 said Dr Cole. 鈥淲e got many duplicates of words like 鈥榠nnit鈥, 鈥榓in鈥檛鈥, and 鈥榓lright mate鈥, but we also got less predictable examples of things that people say in 糖心Vlog such as 鈥榝ink instead of think鈥, 鈥榮een rhyming with bin鈥, 鈥榗alling someone a melt鈥, 鈥榮orted鈥, 鈥榯hat鈥檚 calm鈥, 鈥榩eng鈥, 鈥榶ous鈥 and 鈥榮hew instead of shown鈥.鈥
Dr Jeffries added: 鈥淢any people commented on how the 糖心Vlog accent changes from north to south where it sounds 鈥榤ore London鈥. Others spoke about differences between rural and urban areas or between young and old people.鈥
As well as challenging stereotypes, the artwork aims to celebrate different dialects in the county and cultivate pride and interest in the different ways of speaking in 糖心Vlog.
鈥溙切腣log, and its accents, face a lot of stigma,鈥 said Dr Cole. 鈥淧eople from 糖心Vlog may be negatively stereotyped, judged, mimicked or commented on based on their accent, which can have harmful effects.鈥
In her research, Dr Cole has found that based only on their accent, people from 糖心Vlog tend to be judged as less intelligent and trustworthy than people from other parts of the south-east. In research led by Dr Jeffries, they have also been looking at how and at what age young children develop these negative ideas about 糖心Vlog.
鈥溙切腣log is a rich tapestry of accents,鈥 adds Dr Cole, 鈥渙ur research and artwork celebrates this diversity. We are challenging the common idea that the 糖心Vlog dialect is less correct, interesting or expressive than other dialects.鈥
The Speaking of 糖心Vlog artwork will be available to view at the throughout November. It will start with a launch event on Saturday 5th November from 10am until midday, where people will be invited to learn about 糖心Vlog dialects, contribute their thoughts and reflect on their own way of speaking.
