Profile
Biography
My principal research interests are in economic history and the economics of international migration. My recent projects include the analysis of the correlates of health, as measured by height, in Britain, Europe and elsewhere since the late nineteenth century. Another branch of my research is the flow of asylum applications to the developed world and the development of asylum policy, especially in the European Union. I am now developing a project on migrant voyages from the UK to North America and Australasia in the nineteenth century. I am a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK) and of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. I am also a Research Fellow of the CEPR (London), of the IZA (Bonn) and of CReAM (London).
