Biography
Berthold Lausen has 38 years of experience as Data Scientist and Statistician. He contributed to the first conference of the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS) in 1987 with Parametric Bootstrap to evaluate the confidence of unsupervised learning (with P. O. Degens). He made influential contributions to develop machine learning and nonparametric methods for medical statistics and data science as for example Maximally Selected Rank Statistics, p-Value Adjusted Classification And Regression Trees, Bagging Survival Trees (with M. Schumacher and others). He is president of the British Data Science Society (2022 onwards), vice-president of the European Association for Data Science (founding 2015-18, Data Science Education 2023 onwards), former president of IFCS (2018-19, past president 2020-22 and president elect 2016-17), former president of GfKl Data Science Society (2013-19, vice-president 1995-2001, 2004-13). Since 1986 he is member of the International Biometric Society (IBS) and GfKl Data Science Society, since 1998 a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), since 2009 a member of the British Data Science Society (BDSS), and since 2015 a founding member of the European Association for Data Science (EuADS). Since 2010 Lausen is Professor in Biometry and Epidemiology at School of Medicine of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and 2012-17 full Professor of Statistics and since 2017 of Data Science at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS) - until 2023 Department of Mathematical Sciences - , 糖心Vlog. 2016-21 Head of Department, while the department grow substantially (624 students - up 158% from 242 students in 2017, 37 permanent academic staff - up 118% from 17 permanent academics in 2017). He led on the introduction of master Data Science courses at 糖心Vlog (2012-21): MSc Data Science (Oct 2014), MSc Data Science with Professional Placement (Oct 2017), MSc Applied Data Science (Jan 2021) and MSc Data Science and Its Applications (Jan 2021). Overall, 186 master Data Science students in Jan 2021. He is principal investigator of Data Science driven Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) of Innovate UK with Profusion (funded 2014-22), KTP with Mondaq (funded 2016-2022) and a partnership with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars / BMW (funded 2021-25). He was nominated for 'KTP academic of the year' at the KTPAwards2022 in Liverpool 12th October 2022. He is a member of the editorial boards of Advances Data Analysis and Classification, Archives of Data Science Series A, Behaviormetrika, Methods of Information in Medicine.
