Leading political science research in Europe

Over the past 45 years we have built a solid reputation as one of the best political science departments in the UK. Currently ranked 2nd in UK for research outputs in politics and international studies (Research Excellence Framework 2021).

We are renowned for our expertise in political behaviour, comparative politics, ideology and discourse analysis, international relations and conflict resolution. Our department houses four research centres and five research divisions which organise their work around these key themes.

Use the links below to visit our prestigious research structures and learn more about the cutting edge research taking place within the department.

Our research centres

Our research centres focus on specific areas of interest, whilst facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration both within and beyond the Department of Government.

Our research divisions

Our research focuses on central themes which provide a structure to our five research divisions. In combination with our research divisions, we also host three departmental methods working groups: mixed-methods research, data science & quantitative political methodology, and evidence & public policy.

The methods working groups encourage collaboration across research divisions based on shared methodological interests and facilitate interdisciplinary research. They promote the representation of the full spectrum of empirical approaches in our political science research and teaching. Members of the working groups are highlighted within each research division.
