Meet the team behind the successful ÌÇÐÄVlog Law Clinic

Our team members are made up of academics and students.

Our academics have extensive clinical and legal experience, which they share with our students through training and mentoring in order to ensure quality services to the community. Our student team members represent the views of their colleagues in management decisions and are a constant source of new ideas and inspirational enthusiasm.

Professor Donald Nicolson

Director

ÌÇÐÄVlog Law Clinic, ÌÇÐÄVlog

Awarded an OBE in 2011 for his services to the legal profession, Donald became Director of the ÌÇÐÄVlog Law Clinic in 2017 after founding both the University of Bristol Law Clinic and the multi award winning University of Strathclyde Law Clinic. Donald sat on the Law Society’s Access to Justice Committee and was a founding Director of LawWorks Scotland, and is still a Trustee of the Clinical Legal Education Organisation. Drawing on over 30 years of clinical experience and practices in the Law Clinic, he co-authored How to Set Up and Run a Law Clinic: Principles and Practice (2023, Edgar Elgar) with JoNel Newman and Richard Grimes.

 Elizabeth Fisher-Frank

Supervisor

Liz is a solicitor (non-practising) with many years experience in representing clients in social welfare law, in particular family law, care proceedings and children’s rights. She set up and managed projects in law firms and local and national charities aimed at improving access to justice for vulnerable young people. She has also campaigned on access to justice issues plus has written for the legal press about this. She is a former member of the Law Society’s Children Panel and its Children Law Sub Committee. In September 2019 she was appointed to the Law Society's Family Committee which considers legal and policy issues. In 2023, she was ‘highly commended’ for her community work in the national Lexis Nexis Family Law Awards. She has a Creative Writing MA and writes novels, plays and scripts with legal themes.

Dr Olayinka Lewis

Olayinka worked as Academic Director of The Law Clinic at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. There, he implemented the expansion of the Law Clinic’s clientele, advice provision, and volunteer numbers. ‘Yinka previously worked as a solicitor for a number of years within the UK and abroad in various areas of law including petroleum law, commercial law, civil litigation, and immigration and asylum law. He has interests and expertise in immigration and asylum law and is passionate to provide immigration advice and training.

Dr Michele Stephens

Law Clinic Administrator

ÌÇÐÄVlog Law Clinic, ÌÇÐÄVlog

Michele Stephens holds a PhD in Latin American History from the University of Oklahoma and an LLM in International Human Rights Law from the ÌÇÐÄVlog. Michele has taught Latin American and Native American history at the university level for more than a decade and is looking forward to working with Law students and faculty in a different capacity. She recently worked on a British Academy-funded research project exploring the experiences of abuse survivors in family court. In her spare time, she serves as an expert witness researcher for the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies (US), helping US immigration attorneys secure asylum for victims of gender-based violence from Mexico and Central America.

Courtney Byrne

Co-Student Director

Courtney is a third year LLB student, who has been an active member of the Clinic since her first year. Courtney began her time in the Clinic as a part of the Innocence project and has since participated in various outreach programs and a variety of casework, taking a particular interest in family law. Courtney’s dedication to the Clinic has allowed her to take on cases while on placement and achieve her gold membership. After witnessing the difficulties for legal aid in family law, Courtney is committed to improving access to justice for our local community. Once graduated, Courtney aims to become a solicitor using the skills she has developed within her role in the Clinic to support vulnerable members of the community.

Favor Osazee

Co-Student Director

Favor is a final-year undergraduate LLB student who has been a committed member of the Clinic since her first year. She has undertaken multiple projects throughout her time in the Clinic, including the housing and homelessness project and the Next Chapter outreach programme. Through these projects, Favor has contributed to supporting vulnerable individuals within Colchester and has been able to work with a diverse range of clients. As a Student Director, Favor is eager to raise community awareness of their legal rights and promote access to justice. She is dedicated to cultivating a positive and inclusive environment for students, staff and clients within the community. Once Favor graduates, she plans to become a solicitor and continue using the skills she gained from the Clinic to champion justice accessibility.

Kwai Forbes

Co-Deputy Student Director

ÌÇÐÄVlog Law Clinic, ÌÇÐÄVlog

Kwai is a second-year undergraduate LLB student. During her first year, she maintained an active role in the Clinic and participated in the Immigration Project. Volunteering has taught Kwai the importance of access to justice and legal advocacy for individuals who may otherwise struggle to access the legal system. Alongside helping members of the community as a volunteer, Kwai has also taken the role of support peers within the Clinic and is a first point of contact for its member. After graduation, she looks forward to undertaking a career as a solicitor, but hopes to be able to maintain pro-bono work to continue to support the community.

Sarah Loron

Co-Deputy Student Director

ÌÇÐÄVlog Law Clinic, ÌÇÐÄVlog

Sarah is in the final year of her Double Degree in French and English Law She has been actively involved in the Clinic, earning her place in the Miscarriages of Justice and Social Security Projects. Her work has included supporting the appeal of an unsafe conviction, interviewing vulnerable clients, assisting clients with complex welfare forms, and drafting appeals. This year, she continues her involvement as a caseworker and Social Security Project member, while also supporting new Welfare Benefits Project members. Recognised for her dedicated, collaborative, and thoughtful approach, Sarah is committed to contributing meaningfully to the Clinic. As a society board member, a former Law Star, and a content writer for a legal blog, her experiences have strengthened her communication, leadership, and organisational skills, all of which she brings to her role as Co-Deputy Student Director. She aspires to become a solicitor advocate in commercial law, while continuing to dedicate time to pro bono work and promoting access to justice. Sarah cares deeply about welfare, equality, and inclusion, and is committed to supporting these values through her present and future work.

Claire Cunnigham

Social Security Law Project Lead

ÌÇÐÄVlog Law Clinic, ÌÇÐÄVlog

Claire has 40 years’ experience working as a welfare rights advisor in both local authorities and third sector organisations such as Citizens Advice. Over four decades she has assisted 1000’s of clients to successfully challenge adverse welfare benefit decisions. In addition, Claire has initiated, managed and worked on numerous welfare benefit take-up campaigns which have enabled many of the most disadvantaged members society to access the much-needed financial support to which they are entitled. In 2023 Claire approached the Law Clinic, whilst employed by Colchester Borough Homes (CBH), with the idea of working with law students to increase her capacity to help CBH tenants to maximise their income. Since then she has worked closely with a number of students mentoring them as they have assisted clients and inspiring them to consider social security law as an area in which they could forge a rewarding career.

Where it all began

From it's launch in 2008, the Clinic's objectives are to enhance access to justice while providing students with experience in putting their legal knowledge into practice, learning legal skills and developing ethical awareness. In 2022, this remains a fundamental objective of the ÌÇÐÄVlog Law Clinic.
