Classical German Philosophy

Uncovering the roots of European Philosophy

This research cluster covers a major area of research and teaching at 糖心Vlog. Many of our academic staff are experts on Kant and the post-Kantian tradition including, Schelling and Hegel, as well as later nineteenth-century philosophers, such as Marx, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche.

Members of the Classical Germany Philosophy research cluster have published a variety of work on the reception of German and transcendental Idealism by critical theorists, on Hegel and the relationship between aesthetics and politics and on Kierkegaard’s critique of Hegel’s account of pure thought and his reading of the place of Socrates in the history of philosophy. Our members are also published authors.

Professor Wayne Martin

Research interests: Philosophy of Psychiatry; Phenomenology (esp Hume, Husserl, Heidegger, Th Lipps, L&oslashgstrup); Kant and post-Kantian idealism (esp Fichte); The history and philosophy of logic; Philosophy and painting; Self-Consciousness; Autonomy and the Regulation of Care; Political Philosophy; Will, Agency and Contract

Dr Matthew Burch

Research interests: Matt works on issues at the intersection of phenomenology; action theory; and research in the cognitive and social sciences.

Dr Daniel Watts

Research interests: Kierkegaard; Wittgenstein; The theory of judgement; Medical Humanities; Existentialism and phenomenology; Moral and political philosophy and; Philosophy of religion

Research interests: Social and Political Philosophy (focus on contemporary theories and 19th century German authors); Frankfurt School and Contemporary Critical Theory; Aesthetics
